Microneedling aka collagen induction therapy is an important part of regenerative aesthetic medicine. It addresses common signs of ageing like fine lines and reduced skin tone and also treats skin concerns including enlarged pores and poor texture. Microneedling is also ideal for melasma and pigmentation and is excellent at improving the appearance of surgical and acne scars. At VAE we use SkinPen which is a TGA approved device.

During a treatment, a pen-like device is attached to a disposable cartridge which contains a series of small needles. As the device moves across the skin, it creates small microinjuries which aren’t visible to the naked eye. These small punctures encourage tissue regeneration which gradually improves the appearance of the skin. This tissue regeneration process is referred to as collagen induction therapy (CIT).

The CIT process breaks down old and damaged strands of collagen, leaving the skin to produce new, stronger strands. Not only does this improve the appearance of the skin, but the structure and function too.

  • SkinPen is ideal for anyone who wants glowing, rejuvenated skin! It is also great for anyone wanting to address scarring, pigmentation and fine lines with minimal downtime. SkinPen can be used on both men and women and can be used on any skin tone from fair to tanned skin.

  • During a typical treatment, a pen-like device is attached to a disposable cartridge, which contains a series of small needles. As the device moves across the skin, it creates small microinjuries, which aren’t visible to the naked eye. Most people require no topical numbing and can manage the treatment with ease, though this will of course be tailored to your needs.

  • Please come to your appointment make up, moisturiser and sunscreen free. For 3 days prior to your treatment please do not use any skincare products that contain Vitamin A and avoid sun exposure. Do not do any home needling or exfoliation treatments following your treatment.

  • This will be discussed at your initial appointment however it usually takes up to three months to see a visible improvement and multiple sessions are required for best results.

  • While experiences vary, the following can usually be expected after a SkinPen session:

    - Mild redness and swelling for up to 24-48 hours after treatment
    - Slight discomfort for the first 24 hours
    - Mild bruising
    - Minor crusting and scabbing for several days after each session
    - Skin dryness and tightness
    - Itching and tingling for several days
    - Skin peeling
    - Temporary darkening of skin pigment before it lightens

  • Overall, microneedling devices are minimally invasive, which means the risk of side effects is low. During your consultation, we will discuss any potential side effects that can occur. We will also discuss your aftercare and it’s importance. Following specific aftercare instructions will help keep any adverse effects to a minimum. Adverse effects after a SkinPen session are rare.
